Same thing happened to me. My 1988 Suzuki Samurai has always passed smog. Totally stock. This test the "technician" said that my catalytic converter was from a 1991 model and that while it passed on all the numbers, not polluting. This cat has been on more than 6 years when the last one failed. It will require that the cat be replaced with a 1988 model cat. Cost $500, Vehicle value is likely $2K.

I'm moving out of CA. Income tax, among the highest in the country. Gasoline tax highest anywhere. It is a socialist state and the CARB is the Gestapo.
